Bai Gaoxing pretends to be obedient, acting as if nothing has happened.
He watches Li Pu walk back to the bedroom and only breathes a sigh of relief when he confirms that the door is securely closed.
He just can’t help it...
Bai Gaoxing jumps off the cage, reflects on his earlier misbehavior, and turns around when he hears someone knocking on the door.
“Brother Li, I’ve got all your express delivery.” A muffled voice comes through the door.
Bai Gaoxing flutters to the shoe rack, almost flush with the doorbell screen, and takes a look at the image outside.
It is still the upright young man he saw that day, holding a large package in each hand, quietly waiting for someone to open the door.
Bai Gaoxing looks back, sees no movement in the bedroom, and wants to open the door but hesitates. After a moment of thought, he steps on the dialogue button and asks, “Who is it?”
At least he should let the person know someone is home; otherwise, the courier might think no one is around.
This approach works well. The person outside immediately responds, “Delivery!”
Bai Gaoxing’s eyes light up. The chance to talk to someone excites him. After holding it in for more than a day, he is on the verge of losing control!
He clears his throat and eagerly repeats, “Who is it?”
The person outside hesitates for a moment before answering, “Brother Li, I’m here to deliver the package.”
“I didn’t hear clearly. Who is it?”
“Delivery!”
Bai Gaoxing stamps his feet in excitement.
But saying too much could be problematic. He reluctantly swallows back more words and says, “Wait a minute.”
Just then, Li Pu comes out of the bedroom. He has changed into casual home clothes, and his half-dry hair is swept back, making his eyebrows and eyes appear deeper.
At that moment, someone outside calls out again, “Brother Li, open the door?”
Li Pu walks toward the door, notices Bai Gaoxing standing on the shoe rack, and asks, “Who is it?”
Bai Gaoxing quickly answers, “The courier!”
Li Pu glances at him, moves him to the cage in the living room, and then turns back to open the door.
“Brother Li,” Mei Youshu says, looking confused, “Why did you ask me several times?”
Li Pu looks back at Bai Gaoxing, does not answer, and steps aside, “Come in.”
Mei Youshu brings the package into the living room and sets it down with a loud “bang,” which is enough to show the weight of the two packages.
“It was Dabai who spoke just now,” Li Pu says, glances at the courier slip on the package, and explains.
“Dabai?” Mei Youshu is momentarily stunned. When he turns his head and sees the large white ball nearby, he exclaims, “Oh my god!”
Bai Gaoxing watches as Mei Youshu jumps two meters away, presses against the wall, and shivers. His previously reliable demeanor vanishes completely. This is the first time Bai Gaoxing has seen someone so frightened of a bird.
Bai Gaoxing tilts his head and yawns.
“No, did it really say that?” Mei Youshu, still in disbelief, stammers, “It spoke several sentences!”
“Huh?” Li Pu is a bit surprised. “What did it say?”
“Let me think... ‘Who is it,’ ‘Wait a minute,’ and ‘The courier’ when you opened the door,” Mei Youshu says. “And it got everything right... Is it really that smart?”
“Very smart,” Li Pu agrees. He recalls that Peter Wang mentioned that this type of parrot can communicate with its owner in simple phrases after some training.
“If you train it a little more, it might even become a spirit.” Mei Youshu glances back quickly and gets goosebumps again.
Bai Gaoxing remains silent. What is the big deal? As long as no one tries to slice him, he can easily perform a BBC news segment on the spot.
Soon, Li Pu takes a paper cutter and opens the box. The sound of the paper being cut is loud and piercing as the box is revealed, exposing its contents.
An extremely luxurious large cage.
Currently, it is still in parts, but from the size of the cage and the number of exposed accessories, it is clear how big and elaborate it is.
Oh~ It looks like he has picked a good one.
Bai Gaoxing watches from behind as Li Pu checks the contents and begins assembling the new cage.
Mei Youshu, still facing the wall, hears the noise and wants to move but doesn’t dare. Finally, he extends a hand to block his peripheral vision and ventures over. “Brother Li, I’ll help you...”
The cage has many parts, including lunch boxes, water bottles, climbing ropes, standing sticks, and teething sticks. After nearly an hour of assembling, a huge, gorgeous birdcage with gold wire and a black bottom, complete with four wheels, is finally put together.
Gorgeous, grand, and with four wheels.
Bai Gaoxing is eager to move in and even wants to live in it now.
“Okay,” Mei Youshu says, dusting off his hands. “Where should we put it?”
Li Pu looks around and points to the large Monstera plant. “Against the wall.”
Bai Gaoxing shows a disapproving expression. It might splash against the wall and stain it. The wall is so white!
But never mind, he isn’t a real bird and can control himself.
Bai Gaoxing steps onto Li Pu’s arm and jumps into the cage. After squinting around and taking in the view, he sighs: It is really dazzling!
Outside, the two men continue with the remaining deliveries. “Brother Li, what is this?”
“Dried insects.”
“And these two?”
“A toy tricycle and a coin jar.”
“Is this… clothes? Do birds need to wear clothes?” Mei Youshu asks, holding up something made of several colorful pieces of cloth.
Li Pu glances at it and replies casually, “Diaper.”
Mei Youshu’s hand trembles.
Bai Gaoxing, who has been eating melon seeds in the cage, is also stunned. He turns his head to look at the item in Mei Youshu’s hand and takes a few steps back in shock, almost falling off his perch.
He recognizes the item. When he has been hand-rearing baby parrots, he has used it to prevent them from pooping on him.
But if he is asked to wear it…
Seeing Li Pu reach for him, Bai Gaoxing retreats to the corner of the cage and shrinks back, contrary to his usual enthusiasm.
He’d rather die than wear such an undignified item!
“Dabai,” Li Pu calls, frowning slightly, puzzled by the parrot’s sudden disobedience. After a moment’s thought, he raises his hand to close the cage door.
No—!!! Don’t close the door!!!
Bai Gaoxing immediately springs from the corner, grabs the cage door with his beak, and tries to pull it open.
However, the door is a snap-on type, and no matter how hard he pulls, it won’t budge. When Li Pu opens the cage from the outside, Bai Gaoxing rushes out and flutters up to his shoulder.
“Dabai, come down,” Li Pu says, holding up a diaper bag with a small pineapple pattern.
Bai Gaoxing, desperate not to wear it, shakes his head vigorously, clearly protesting. “I won’t! I won’t!” Bai Gaoxing makes an exaggerated display of opening his mouth wide toward Mei Youshu.
The trick works; Mei Youshu dodges and says with a pained expression, “Brother Li, you should do it yourself!”
Since his assistant is useless, Li Pu has no choice but to handle it himself. However, the large parrot proves difficult to catch.
Bai Gaoxing, resolute, falls to the ground and pretends to be dead.
Li Pu, holding the cloth bag in one hand and the parrot in the other, is at an impasse.
It seems Dabai truly doesn’t want to cooperate.
Li Pu looks at the parrot lying upside down and sighs helplessly, “Then I won’t make you wear it for now.”
Seeing Li Pu’s softened stance, Bai Gaoxing climbs up and happily nudges him with his wings. Good brother!
“It really shouldn’t be necessary to put this on,” Mei Youshu says, looking around. “The house is quite clean, and large parrots seem to be able to hold their waste.” Although he is scared, he dutifully checks.
“…Okay.” Li Pu compromises, setting aside the other two items from the express box.
Bai Gaoxing is deeply moved. He immediately flies to the trash can and pretends to aim his rear at the opening.
“Look, Brother Li, he finds his place,” Mei Youshu says, astonished.
"No wonder..." Li Pu is stunned and begins to consider the feasibility of not making Dabai wear a diaper. Dabai was in the living room last night, and he was ready to get up and clean up in the morning—he had no hope for a diaper yesterday, and he hadn’t expected Dabai to really...
With Bai Gaoxing’s diaper crisis resolved, Mei Youshu prepares to leave. Before he goes, Bai Gaoxing overhears their conversation..
“Brother Li, this vacation will probably be shortened. Director Sun is in a hurry... I heard from Sister Li too. You should be prepared.”
"Yes."
“There’s also a new publicity contract. I think I’ll ask you to handle it in a few days.”
“Okay.”
“Nothing else for now. I’ll contact you when there’s new news.” Mei Youshu walks out the door, “I’m leaving, Brother Li.”
Li Pu is left alone in the room.
Bai Gaoxing watches as Li Pu slowly walks back and then into the kitchen.
It is lunchtime again.
Bai Gaoxing tilts his head, thinking it would be nice if the house were livelier. It seems too lonely and a bit pitiful for Li Pu to be alone.
... He takes back what he has said.
Half an hour later, Bai Gaoxing looks at the tender stewed beef brisket, crispy stir-fried vegetables, and fragrant white rice on Li Pu’s plate with tears in his eyes, eating another handful of melon seeds in grief and frustration.
……
The boring afternoon passes with a nap and the occasional angry squawks from a bird downstairs. When Bai Gaoxing wakes up, a beautiful steel stand has been set up next to the coffee table.
It seems that the items bought the day before have arrived. The efficiency is impressive.
“Dabai, come up and take a look,” Li Pu says, patting the stand.
Bai Gaoxing walks up reluctantly, feeling it is nice but a bit cold.
"Not bad," Li Pu says.
“Not bad, not bad,” Bai Gaoxing nods, pretending to parrot.
Just as he is about to say something to liven up the mood, he notices Li Pu has settled in the corner of the sofa like the day before.
Oh no. Bai Gaoxing’s heart sinks. If this continues, he will have to endure another two long hours like last night—
Determined, Bai Gaoxing spots the remote control nearby and dashes over to Li Pu with it in his beak. Dropping it at Li Pu’s feet, he squawks, “Watch TV! Watch TV!”
Please! Let’s watch TV! It’s too boring to just talk casually. If I don't watch something interesting, I’ll suffocate!
Under Bai Gaoxing’s hopeful gaze, Li Pu turns on the TV, which hasn’t been used in half a year, and tunes it to a cartoon channel.
No, not cartoons!
Bai Gaoxing despairs for a moment but then decides to make Li Pu understand his intent. He clears his throat and, mimicking the host of a news program, says, “This news broadcast has concluded. Thank you for watching! The weather forecast has been broadcasted; it’s sunny today. No gifts will be accepted during the holidays this year…”
It is impressive for a parrot to recite such a long string of words, but even more surprising is how Bai Gaoxing’s voice evolves from a mechanical tone to more closely resemble a news host's, and later, even Li Pu’s own voice.
Li Pu is stunned.
So, on the second day after becoming a parrot, Bai Gaoxing discovers he has a new skill.
Is this... voice imitation?
